Description

"Mandala of the Anima Mundi"
Colored pencil, metallic gel pens and acrylic

Anima Mundi is Latin for "soul of the world". In alchemy this is the feminine aspect of every thing in the universe, both organic and inorganic. It is the unseen psychic energy of every object, that subtle energy that beckons you to look at it and to analyze it, or to be struck by its inexplicable beauty or lack thereof.

This divine feminine universal energy and its subcomponents are allegorically depicted by many ancient cultures around the world. In Egypt she was Isis, and is described by her axiom: "I am Isis; no man has lifted my veil". This statement is symbolic of the impenetrabililty of this energy from our normal 5 senses. It cannot be seen because it is veiled in light; it can only be felt via the psyche.

In Jungian psychology, the anima is the often suppressed feminine aspect of male humans (opposed to animus which is hidden masculine within women). The anima describes right brain traits, it is the creative,, abstract, intuitive energy that is easily masked by the natural masculine tendencies of logical, linear thought. Males with a strong connection to the anima are capable of incredible things. Some historical figures who were connected to their anima include Nikola Tesla, Albert Einstein, Leonardo da Vinci, Alex Grey, Carl Jung, Plato, and Michelangelo.

Here I've included a mass of feminine symbolism including the alchemical and astrological feminine signs and the personified figures of the different aspects of anima mundi: Isis, Maya, Eve, Sophia, Shakti and Gaia
